  • Record vs. K-State: 0-0
  • Salary: $126,000

Joe Glenn has been in coaching a really long time, and you haven’t heard of him. That might tell you enough. But in case you wanted to know more… He’s been with his alma mater, South Dakota, since 2012 when he led their transition to the Division I FCS level as part of the Missouri Valley Conference. He took about 25% of the salary from his previous job at Wyoming saying he wanted enough left over in the budget to hire quality assistants.

His return to South Dakota followed a 6 year stint at Wyoming where he was fired after never getting the Pokes to bowl eligibility. He did get them wins over Ole Miss, Virginia, and at Tennessee in his tenure, but ultimately finished 30-41 at Wyoming before being fired. All told his coaching career dates back to 1974 with head coaching positions at Doane, Northern Colorado, and Montana in addition to Wyoming and South Dakota. He never duplicated the BCS success he found at lower levels where he won Division II National Titles in 1996 and ’97 with Northern Colorado and a I-AA Championship with Montana in 2001.

Coyotes Offense

  • 2014 Passing Offense: 189.25 yds/game
  • 2014 Rushing Offense: 166.2 yds/game
  • 2014 Scoring Offense: 19.42 points/game

At least their kicker is good.

Yes, I’m starting the team analysis with the kicker. You have to start somewhere, I guess. Miles Bergner, a junior, was the leading scorer for South Dakota a year ago and is on the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List. He’s one of 12 FCS players named for the award which basically goes to the best kicker that isn’t from an FBS school.  But here’s the fun part. He’s not just the placekicker. He does kickoffs AND punts, too.

Saeger and Earl and Saeger

It’s been a rotation at QB for South Dakota the past year. Ryan Saeger, a junior this season, looked to be the 2014 starter but lost the job due to injury to current senior Kevin Earl. He “won” the job back later in the season when Earl was injured. With both healthy in the spring Saeger got the start and took the #1 reps. We expect him to be the starter on Saturday.

Shufford: The Wide Receiver… on the line?

Eric Shufford is one of the team captains this season. And rightfully so. He had 53 catches for 699 yards and 5 TDs a year ago, earning him honorable mention All-MVFC. But then I noticed this quote on the South Dakota website:

Outside the quarterback position, the Coyotes return all but two linemen on the offensive side of the ball including wide outs Eric Shufford (53 rec, 699 yds, 5 TDs) and Riley Donovan (38 rec, 495 yds, 1 TD), and sophomore tight end Aaron Ramsey (12 rec, 225 yds), who missed half of last season due to injury.

Ok… if you want to include a tight end as part of the line, I can buy that. But wide outs? And “Outside the quarterback position?” These people make KU fans seem knowledgeable about football.

Coyotes Defense

  • 2014 Passing defense: 232.17 yds/game
  • 2014 Rushing defense: 234.5 yds/game
  • 2014 Points against: 35.58 points/game

#33 Keyen Lage

Without question, Lage is the leader of the Coyotes defense. The senior is a 2 year captain and he’s started every game since he was a true freshman. He had 66 tackles in 2014 including 5.5 tackles for loss.

The new guys with the new 4-3

Last season the Coyotes only managed 8 sacks on the season. You might not be a numbers guru, but we’ll just say that’s not very good. So headed into this season they’re switching to a 4-3 defense, and they’re doing so by using two defensive ends that are brand new to the position. Both Colin Mertlik (#45, JR)  and Andrew Van Ginkel (#17, RS FR) were high school quarterbacks who converted to linebacker at South Dakota. Now they’re starting defensive ends. Have we mentioned this isn’t a great team?
