CHAMPIONSHIPS
1 Big 12 (2011)
AWARDS
Big 12 Coach of the Year (2010)
Paul “Bear” Bryant Award (2011)
Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year (2011)

Head Coach: Mike Gundy

  • Overall Record (Yrs): 88-44 (10)
  • Record at School (Yrs): Same
  • Record vs. K-State: 4-3
  • Salary: $3.75 million

Every conversation about Mike Gundy has to begin with the fact that he’s a man. He’s 40. Or he was, at least. He’s actually 48 now, and everyone can’t wait to hear the sort of rant he might have for his 50th birthday party.

Gundy is an Oklahoma State guy. He was the high school Oklahoma Player of the Year in 1986, and then played QB for the Cowboys. He held a ton of OSU records, and the Division 1 record for most consecutive passes without an interception until RGIII broke it against Gundy’s team. Aside from a brief stop at Baylor and a 3 year stint at Maryland, Gundy has been at Oklahoma State ever since. He made it to the head coaching spot in 2005.

As for awards, he led OSU to a Big 12 title in 2011, and earned a couple national coach of the year awards that year, too. He failed in his repeat attempt for Big 12 Coach of the Year award that year because Bill Snyder just wanted it more.

Sophomore QB Mason Rudolph (Now wears #2)

Sophomore QB Mason Rudolph (Now wears #2)

Cowboys Offense

  • Passing Offense: 321.0 yds/game (19th in FBS)
  • Rushing Offense: 160.50 yds/game (83rd in FBS)
  • Scoring Offense: 38.8 points/game (26th in FBS)

The QBs

What do you do when you have one quarterback who can run and one who can throw? Run the wildcat when you get in the red zone, of course. Mason Rudolph has been starting for Oklahoma State with JW Walsh picking up the red zone and short yardage situations. When he comes in they’re likely running the ball, however, it’s not a Charles Jones situation. He does have the threat of passing, and did just that for a TD against Texas last week. Rudolph on the other hand isn’t a huge threat to run, but can when he has to. He can be easily rattled with pressure and is prone to making mistakes. You have to wonder how short his leash is after throwing picks on back to back attempts against Texas.

All about the air

There isn’t much of a run threat from Oklahoma State. It’s all about what is happening in the air, and they have a foursome of wide receivers who are very good:

NAME REC YDS AVG LONG TD
#13 David Glidden 15 324 21.6 67 (TD) 3
#3 Marcell Ateman 13 203 15.6 49 2
#28 James Washington 12 155 12.9 40 0
#7 Brandon Sheperd 9 131 14.6 38 1

The two seniors, Glidden and Sheperd each have over 1,000 yards receiving in their career, and K-Staters know them all too well.

But what about the kicker?

Oklahoma State doesn’t have a ton of faith in Ben Grogan, their kicker. He’s 8/10 on field goals on the season and has missed 2 extra point attempts… both were blocked against UTSA. A kicker who is prone to blocks? Travis Britz could have fun with that.

Senior CB Kevin Peterson

Senior CB Kevin Peterson

Cowboy Defense

  • Passing defense: 170.5 yds/game (27th in FBS)
  • Rushing defense: 129.25 yds/game (41st in FBS)
  • Points against: 15.5 points/game (18th in FBS)

The blitzers

Oklahoma State rarely is known for their defense… and they make up for it with their aggressive nature. They’ll blitz constantly, and try to change up the look a lot. As a result they’re susceptible to quick passes and can give up some big runs if you can get around the initial attack. Using Justin Silmon in combination with the quick pop passes to Gronk and Dimel will be huge in trying to open up time for something longer and more in Hubener’s wheel house.

#1 Kevin Peterson

Peterson is still the man on this Oklahoma State defense. He’s a fast and physical corner who shuts down the best wide receiver on every team he faces (except, of course, when he faced Tyler Lockett last season). He began the season with a knee injury, but seems to be back to full speed after his surgery.

So who else?

Aside from Peterson this is a defense without many stars. In terms of personnel (certainly not schemes), they look a lot like K-State. They’re just defensively sound and play a very good team defense. They’re also deep. One of their biggest stops against Texas came on a 4th & 10 play in which redshirt freshman Jarrell Owens made the stop on the uber athletic Heard. It wasn’t just his first sack… it was his first career tackle.
