  • Salary: $4.2 million

Over the past year, Art Briles has gone from the gun firin’ boot wearin’ church goin’ Texan to the absolute villain of the Big 12. He can’t seem to stop having scandals at Baylor, and certainly seems to be running a win at all costs, morals be damned program. He wears his Texan pride well, and sometimes talks like the rich Texan from the Simpsons. Last year he was quoted as saying, “I’ll fight a man with three children and a nice house any day over a man that’s living out of a car.” No one knows what it means or why he said it, but it certainly sounds Texan.

Briles played his college ball at Houston, and transferred to finish his degree at Texas Tech. After a 20 year high school coaching career in which he became a legendary high school coach in the state of Texas, he coached running backs at Tech and then took over the head coaching duties at Houston for Dana Dimel.

Briles took over a Baylor program that had been horrible since joining the Big 12 and took them to their first bowl game in 15 years in his 3rd year. Since then they’ve continued to be at or near the top of the conference under Art Briles’s offense, including back to back Big 12 championships.

Freshman QB Jarrett Stidham

Freshman QB Jarrett Stidham

QB Injuries all around

Sean Russell, Baylor’s latest QB statistical anomaly, is out for the season, but does that mean Baylor is done? Not at all. While his replacement, 5 star recruit Jarrett Stidham, only was 1 for 1 when replacing Russell at Iowa State, he’s already thrown 6 TDs this season with a gaudy 24 of 28 for 331 yards in mop up duties. Sure, he’s a true freshman, but he’s ready to play, and if ever there was a plug and play system, that’s what Baylor is working in Waco.

Shocking.

Another reason to not get our hopes up when Baylor’s QB is out? This is a run first team. It always has been under Art Briles. Those aren’t the plays that make the highlights, but they’re the ones that win them the games. They just keep poking at you with Shock Linwood until something opens up over the middle and suddenly you’re down by yet another touchdown. Linwood is currently the 7th leading rusher in college football, and yet no one ever seems to notice him.

Corey Coleman

You can’t put up numbers like Baylor does without creating some stars at wide receiver, either. Keep an eye on #1, Corey Coleman. He’s not just the third best receiver in college football by yards, he’s also rushed the ball 11 times this year in the ridiculous Baylor offense.

Bennett’s blitzes

Baylor used to be marred with bad defenses and could only try to outscore you. Phil Bennett has changed all of that. The former K-State DC loves to blitz, and he’ll do it 1000 different ways from as many different looks. What they didn’t have in talent, they made up for in a nearly impossible to read defense… until they were able to get the bodies to go along with it.

Oak Man.

There’s no doubt that Sean Oakman is intimidating. In his three years at Baylor, Oakman has made a name for himself. He’s their sack master, and fits right in with their “horrible people play for us” mentality. He was a cast off from Penn State for violating team rules, and naturally found a fit with Baylor, where there are no team rules. Just don’t tell him I said so. I want to live.
